Biografie
Paul Simon wurde am 13. Oktober 1941 geboren. Gerademal drei Wochen später, am 5. November 1941, erblickte Art Garfunkel das Licht der Welt. Als Duo Simon & Garfunkel sind die beiden Amerikaner in die Musikgeschichte eingegangen. Beide verbrachten ihre Kindheit in Queens und landeten ihren ersten kleinen Hit bereits 1957. Der Song hieß „Hey Schoolgirl“. Damals nannten die Musiker sich noch Tom & Jerry. Später studierte Art erst einmal Architektur und Simon englische Literatur. Auch während des Studiums arbeiteten beide an unterschiedlichen Musikprojekten.
1962 trafen sie sich wieder und setzten die gemeinsame Arbeit fort. Schließlich nahmen sie 1964 das Album „Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M“ auf, das unter dem Namen Simon & Garfunkel veröffentlicht wird. Zu hören ist darauf unter anderem der spätere Welthit „The Sound Of Silence“, dessen Songtext zu einem typischen Ohrwurm geworden ist. Aber zunächst floppte das Album. Simon & Garfunkel veränderten den Sound, nahmen E-Gitarren und Drums hinzu und veröffentlichten 1965 das Album „Sounds Of Silence“. Damit schafften sie den Durchbruch. Der Song „Homeward Bound“, dessen Lyrics viele Menschen auf der Welt auswendig kennen, kletterte in den englischen Charts auf den ersten Platz. In den nächsten Jahren folgte zahlreiche weitere Hits. Songtexte wie „Bridge Over Troubled Water“ oder „The Boxer“ sind Generationen von Menschen bekannt.
